Students gain international research experience from the very start of the program, and all are expected to spend at least one semester at their co-advisor’s institution abroad.
Research topics span the theoretical and observational aspects of astrophysics, cosmology, and gravitation, including participation in major international collaborations such as Einstein Telescope, LIGO, Virgo, J-PAS, J-PLUS, S-PLUS, Subaru PFS, DELVE, Euclid, LSST, Pierre Auger Observatory, SWGO and CTA.
Positions, when available, are detailed at Applications. Scholarships are available through several funding agencies. Candidates are selected on the basis of an online interview, CV, and reference letters.
Vitória is the capital of the Espírito Santo state. It is a human-sized city on the southeast coast of Brazil, well-connected and pleasant. PhD students usually live within walking distance of both the Ufes campus and the beach. The airport is also very close to the campus, just a ten-minute drive away.

During the initial phase of their study, students will primarily be based in Vitória-ES. By the end of the second year, students are expected to pass a qualifying exam. Students are anticipated to have the chance to visit other collaborating Brazilian institutions, and more notably, the opportunity to spend up to one year at the co-advisor’s overseas institution.
The complete details on all the PPGCosmo rules can be found in its bylaws and resolutions.
